Dropping Tranny
Just curious about dropping the tranny in my 79 Vette. From what I can tell the crossmembers are welded on under the tranny which make it look like I have to pull the engine to get the tranny out. Just wanted to make sure that is right.

It's tight. Pull the driveshaft, shifter and speedo cable. Remove the distributor cap. Jack under the rear of the trans and take the mount out. Take the 4 bolts that hold the tranny in the bellhousing out. Support the rear of the engine- raise it up just a little. Pull the trans back a bit and roll it on it's side and work it to the rear. You may have to adjust the rear of the engine up and down to get it all the way back. It'll come out, it's just a PITA.

The first time you pull it and put it back in, you'll wonder why you ever bought a Vette. After the first time, it ain't so bad.
I have to admit- My crossmember was cut in 1971 and sort of "Bubba'd together. I'm going to rebuild it and make it look nice.
