Just got a 76 with L82 and 4 speed manual and redoing the first round of stuff. The first thing to do with it is start taking stuff apart, right?
Anyway, I noticed while redoing the rear brakes with the car up on jacks, that when you rotate the rear tires with the shifter in neutral, that the passenger side rear wheel hub/end of rear spring (whole assembly) goes up about 1/16 to 1/8" every 180 degrees of rotation. And as it goes up, sometimes it squeaks. Looks like it is associated with the U joints some kind of way?
The driver side rear tire does not do this and turns true and smooth.
And finally, if you jack up the passenger side rear wheel hub/end of spring/assembly to maybe close to a normal running position, then it runs smooth like the driver side rear.
Is this normal or maybe something is bent or a bad U joint???
When the car is jacked up on the frame, the rear suspension is extended way beyond it's operating range. You can actually do damage by engaging the the drivetrain with the car jacked up. If you detect no unusual movement or noise in an operational position, I would not be concerned.
