I think you are  too. i can afford one(since I graduated college, have a house, etc. have what I need) but I don't need one. Your best advice on that thread was to take the money and invest it.
I have a $500 Movado Museum watch and have had it for 7 years and I love it. I mean it is only a watch! You can get great Movado's, Seiko's, etc. for less money and they work as well.
A watch as an investment? Don't want to seem mean, but I think he saw you coming from a mile away=an easy sale.
That would be like being able to afford an older Camaro but instead going out and buying a new Z06. Not smart or cost effective.
just my .02 sorry

I think it's nice to have a half way decent watch for special occasions and such. I own a Whittnauer that I paid about $500 bucks for 2 1/2 years ago. I love it and it looks good on me, but I will own it until it stops ticking. I just don't see any investment potential in a watch......as someone previously said, stick with mutual funds or Stocks........you have the potential to make out a lot better in the long run.

Sorry for sounding like a father but you asked. There should be only two things on your mind (since the Vette is soon to be history.) First School. Second Girls.

Thats it, end of subject.

Keep most of the money and buy a cheap Rolex knock-off to impress people with. I've been offered Rolexes for as little as $60 from some shady charactors and they looked real.

daniel:
If I remember correctly aren't you selling your 'Vette? I see no reason why a 'Vette can't be an investment. My dad paid $10,000 for my '76 'Vette back in 1976....it books at around $16,000 now. Why not use that money to pay off the 'Vette that you have?

If you have $3000 to spare why not purchase a car for that much? A nice reliable car can be had for $3000 (I purchased a good one for $1500). Purchase a car for that much, uninsure the 'Vette and let it sit until your done with college.

That's just my opinion. I'm around your age and I know how I would feel if my parents told me that the 'Vette would have to go....I'd do anything in my power to keep it. Just giving you some ideas.

I remember my dad got me a gold watch for high school grad...and anyway I would rather have had any POS damn CAR, than that watch...but he was in the INSURANCE business...so what could I expect?? well it WAS a nice thought/gift anyway....but being an active type, that watch and me did not get along at all, I must have spend over 5x what is cost just to maintain it...and other's to follow, damn Swiss watches are just plain junk...period...
Now when the Casio fantastic plastic watches became 20 bucks, I bought one of them....ran for 6 years on original battery, replaced that and 4 more years...total TEN freggin YEARS of trouble free service....well now it's been nearly 25 years and have had a Casio only, since then.....and guess what....

I still think of gold watch/chains/heavy rings/etc on a guy as being purely drug/pimp related style of dress....I wouldn't be caught dead with that crap all over me.....

I'll take a watch that takes a licking and keeps on.........................;-)))

:D :D :D    :boxing

I don't have "3000 to spare", but I am being forced to sell the vette, and I can almost get any car I want(minus any classic), and can even finance it. Therefore if I finance it, I can stand to leave 3K out of the downpayment, to put toward something wise like a CD. The jewler told me about the possibilities of a rolex, and I got to thinking, that is all. Its not as if Im walking around trying to find something to spend 3 grand on. But he made it seem like if I got it, when I graduated college, it could be a down payment on a house...to me that will surve me better then a vette. However, under closer view I realize that is not true, and that the stock market might be a good idea(in the resession I will buy, so when we come out of it around my graduation, I'll have my down payment and some, or another c3). I still think Im going to keep 3K out of the downpayment for my next car, that money will go in stocks probably.

A vette is wonderful now, but a nice house I can afford in 8 years is much better IMO. Granted I like to live in the now, but sometimes the future needs to be considered. Some guy in that thread put it best when he said a rolex to a watch guy, is the same as a vette to us car guys...Different strokes for different folks.

Buy a G-shock for $70 and bank the rest. I bought a sports wind-up Timex divers watch in 1970 that is still in use today.
