The problem with my 79 is when I open either door the dome light will not come on. It will come on when I turn the headlight switch all the way to the left.
There is a timer box located by the glove box. Its orange in color and it keeps the dome light on for 30 or more seconds. Sometime they fail by keeping the lights on and killing the battery. Ask me how I know
The ground is what turns the dome on and the ground between the lower lights and the dome is common...so its almost impossible for that to happen unless some one wired it that way on purpose. You can do that at the c-124 connector.Does your spare tire light do the same as the dome light?
I think I found the problem. I removed the Glove Box and found out the Interior Light Timmer was missing. I jumped the white wires and the dome light comes on. So I will order the Light Timer and hope that's it.

Hmmm thats odd...the dome ground must separate from the other grounds at that point.I'll have to check that out the next time im in there.I dont think the wiring diagram shows it that way.
Check your door switches, and make sure they are depressing far enough with the door closed. Sometimes they get loose, and don't operate correctly.

Maybe your door switches are your only problem. For some reason I thought you said the lower lights came on with the doors but the dome would only come on with the headlight switch....Sorry for the confusion, maybe I confused this thread with another.:o
