My speedometer needle was bouncing around, so I replaced the cable. I bypassed the cruise control mechanism, and ran a longer cable straight from the auto trans to the speedometer.
Problem: the speedometer is 8mph low.
I have only had the car for a year, could this be becuase the trans is geared different; i.e. could the cruise control mechanism that I bypassed affect the speed read out.

I think I have heard about this before...someone just recently did the same thing & found their speedo reading was off as well...can you soak the old cable with tranny fluid re install it & see what happens? Just a thought

I doubt it. Could you get an accurate reading before the change or was it bouncing too much? Is the rear gear stock? Sounds like the rear gear was changed and not the speedo drive gear.
I now the engine is not the original, and the trans appears to have been replaced at some point also. I am not sure about the gearing. the needle bounced around too much before, so I don't know if it was accurate.
Any other ideas? How can I tell if the rear was replaced with different gears.
