I recently purchased a '74 coupe, it has a stock 350, I'm looking to install an Edelbrock 1406 onto the stock manifold. Will this carburetor fit under the hood or do I need to also install a different intake in order to clear the hood? Any help would be appretiated! Thanks, Kevin

I wouldn't try that. The#1406 is a square-bore carb. It can be done with an adaptor but I'm not a fan of such compromises.
A stock 74 engine has a spreadbore manifold. The Edelbrock is a square bore. You can use an adapter but that would raise the carb by the thickness of the adapter. Also, the 1406 probably has an electric choke so you will likely have to change the air cleaner in order for it to fit the top of the carb properly or use a spacer to clear the electric choke mechanism. This may raise the air cleaner too high. If you are set on using the 1406 the best way to do it is to get a square bore manifold and mount the carb directly to it. I use a 14 inch air cleaner on my 74 with an Edelbrock AVS 650 Thunder series carb mounted on a Performance Products manifold ( Edelbrock Performer knockoff ). I still had to use a spacer on the top of the carb to clear the choke but it all fits under the hood. But there ain't much space to spare.
Yes it has an electric choke. And no one has mentioned the plumbing that has to be done. The #1406 does not have an internal filter. The pic shows a #1406 on my former 1967 with external filter and a number of attachment accessories/-AN adaptors ($$$s). As well you will need a tubing bender and flaring tool to create a custom gas tubing line. The Q-jet fuel entry is on the front, the Edelbrock at the back. The costs did add up. Something to think about.
