Hello. Have a fuel gauge that is on the blink... I found it HARD to find a new replacement for that year through various sources.. Where can I find one and how much to re-build if that is not an option?
What makes you think the gauge is bad? More often than not it's the sender, the wire to the sender, or the ground.
Good idea Matt. Pete maybe you should let us help you through a couple little tests to see if it might be something other than the gauge.I've seen a lot of gauges installed wrong over the years.
Speaking of gauges I think I have found and easy way to put a standard load on gauges to see if they're reading fairly close to where they should be.Think I'll start a thread and share.

I'd hate to see you spend the money on a restored gauge and have the same problem. Those gauges are usually pretty reliable. If it does turn out to be the gauge I have several restored ones on the shelf, or could restore yours.
Thanks for all the replies!....I replaced the sending unit when I dropped the tank last summer...I tested the sender to the gauge then with a rough but close reading...I intrestingly enough tried a '75 gauge..smooth reading but seemed like it did not work for the 76 sending unit...Anyhow, when I fill the tank the gauge does not read full...about 3/4...the gauge needle "flickers" around when I am driving..does not stay really still...Maybe this is a grounding issue even though the gauge is steady with ignition key on only...What is that LOAD test that was mentioned?

It sounds like you have already done some testing.
A quick test is to remove the tan wire back at the sender with the ign key on and watch the gauge...it should go to full or past full.
Then ground the same tan wire back at the tank,if the ground is good the gauge should go to empty.
The load test I was referring to is an idea I'm working on for guys that dont have many tools to give a reference test. Its pretty simple you just take a turn signal flasher and ground the tan wire through the flasher.(Tan wire to one terminal on the flasher and ground the other terminal.)The gauge should read about 5/8 of a tank. The flasher should be about 54 ohms of resistance.I tested 3 different ones from 3 different companys and they were all very close. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...uld-share.html
