Default Engine overheated - kinda funny

.........not really. today i finally fired up the 427 on the frame to break in the cam. had it running for around 10 minutes and remember checking temp - it was rising and had reached 210 - then pop - the big hose that attaches to the front of the manifold came loose and water and antifreeze were EVERYWHERE covered 2 bays of my garage. i was behind it so was not hurt but got an antifreeze shower

Any help on what i did wrong would be appreciated. here is how i prepared for the break-in.....
1. put one bottle of antifreeze and water filled under the thermostat before installing it
2. connected the radiator as normal and filled it with water
3. connected a piece of hose between the ports that would notmally go to the heater
4. because i do not have the BB expansion tank installed, i blanked off the filler tube (maybe this was the problem - no vent capability?)

it seems that it popped at 210 and i think that this is the rating of the thermostat - it opened and POP. the clutch fan may be bad bit the radiator was much cooler than the engine block.

any help would be appreciated. Happy Thanksgiving and a special nod to any armed services personnel that read this

Water expands when heated, it blew off the hose because you did not have a pressure relief in the system such as a radiator cap.

so it sound like i should hook up the expansion tank and put a radiator cap on it for the remainder of the break it

Would this have caused the motor to overheat and make the rings NOT seat? This may have happened to my new motor also. The mechanic/engine builder says it overheated and is MY fault so wants to bill me for the labor to put new rings in.

sorry for the slight hi-jack.

Did you use a thermostat that had steam holes drilled in it?
