Did you check that the oil pump drive slot is lined up with the distributor. This is not related to your problem but make sure you have the correct material distributor gear for the camshaft in that motor.

Unless you're gonna do lotsa racing & truly need msd cd box ... suggest you dump msd td dist & msd cd box & coil ... instead take a look at Mallory stand-alone tach drive HEI dist p/n 7564501C ... it's innards are bulletproof HEI & can be had anywhere you get a dist part for a 77 vette (not so w/ msd). Plus, it has hi-output that'll fire 'bout anything you might run on street. Mallory p/n 7564501C. Similar asian copies on ebay for around $100.

I know in the engine paper work, it says use a dist with a 'Mellonized' gear only. incedently, I am also highly interested in this engine. In addition to the crate motor itself, what other parts did you have to buy (besides the headers), to make it work? Is your swap in a auto or manual?

Genuine GM HEI distributor comes with melonized gear... that gear available separately GM p/n 10456413. FYI, Genuine GM shaft is 0.491" ...MSD shaft is 0.500" ... the GM gear must be bored to fit larger shaft ... most, most aftermarket HEI clones have 0.491" shaft.

FYI MSD tach drive dist p/n 8572 requires a separate cd box (ie msd 6).

There is a different diameter shaft between C4 and Late F-body (large cap and small cap) distributors. Both could be had with the roller cam L98.

Yes. If I recall, some dist you refer to have shaft w/ either 0.425" or 0.475" OD ... But are intended for use with fuel injection (ie TBI, TPI) & computer-aided ignition timing curve. Yes, they are also referred to as HEI.

I am referring to GM HEI with large cap with coil in cap & vacuum advance & 4-pin module... intended for use with carb only & NO computer ... like GM dists p/n 01104067 & 93440806 ... also like those found on mid C3 and like vast majority of clones/copies & so very popular with street rodders. Again, that Genuine GM HEI dist I reference has shaft w/ 0.491" OD as do most of its clones/copies.

I recently installed this engine and I used the stock dizzy(rebuilt) from my 75. I was told I had to get the melonized gear. I looked at new gears and found a local dealership that carried a gm melonized gear. Local parts places like autozone had their aftermarket gears for over $100. There were two sizes, cant remember which one. Hope this helps with the gear at least.

I never found the right dipstick, I bought a zz4 tube and used a autozone stick and it works alright. I called yearone and asked for plugs and they gave me the part number but i dont have that either anymore.
