Default clutch recomendations for high torque application

Well we all know how one thing snowballs into another. Well got the 468 tuned on the dyno, made the numbers I expected with the combination. decided to next tackle the transmissions tendency to slip out of 4th gear while on deceleration. So had the trans rebuilt (another story for another time). So after getting all this done I had my first real chance to see what it would do. Ran it up through the gears and it was pulling very hard after it got traction, went to 4th gear and it stopped pulling but continued to rev. Got out of it and pushed in the clutch and then reingaged and it reingaged ok. Got that wonderful burnt clutch smell though. It's done this on two occasions now so I'm thinking I've exceeded the holding power of this clutch. Just what I needed considering I've had this trans out twice this month alrady. So looking for clutch recommendations. Also anything weired about removing a lakewood scattershield (besides a ton of bolts), it was on the car when bought. I've got a CF dual friction on the 73, but is this enough clutch for my 69?

Thanks

Pat Kunz

i think the CF should be fine. i run one on my B/B with 500 + ft lb.. but mine slips out of 4th and first with a new rebuilt M-21... so i looked on the web for some help and came up with this by Jerry MacNeish.

htt://www.camaros.org/bellhousings.shtml

also went to CF web for some great tips... i'll be pulling my engine and trans this week end for a closer look

when talking single disc stuff these are about the top of the pile

http://specclutch.com/

look at the 3+ good for 800ft/lbs. i installed two of these and the feel hold and drivibility is great.

or do the spec my car thing that will give you what they cost and what they hold.

The basic dual friction CF holds excellent for the price. It held my 540 when it was making around 730HP. Couldn't hold 800+. It handled lots of drag strip runs with no issues even on slicks.

Hard to beat them for the money.

This one will get it done:

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

12" Centerforce DF. These were designed for the 572" 720hp crate engine. It'll take anything your 468 can throw at it.

I have the CF dfx 11 inch from jegs they are about $350 It takes on my super sticky 12X27 slicks

The DFX line is the latest series of performance clutches from Centerforce. Centerforce is proud to announce DFX as their competition-proven clutch package for select import and domestic applications. This new DFX series is engineered for competition standards of quality and craftsmanship. The DFX series is aimed at high-end applications that continually demand increased integrity and holding-capacity. DFX scores big, not only with holding-capacity and strength, but also provides some of the best drivability from a race-inspired clutch. DFX retains an easy pedal effort, thanks to Centerforce’s patented ball bearing actuated diaphragm, for smooth engagements without detriment to the vehicle’s release components. The Centerforce DFX performance clutch system utilizes Nodular Iron pressure plate rings and reinforcements designed to help prevent drive strap breakage and safety. The DFX series allows the end user to tailor the performance and style of driving with different choices of clutches and clutch discs: From street/strip to full-on drag racing capability.

Just used one of these on my 565 ft/lb 489 with 3.08 rear end and M21 (which has always tended to slip out of 1st on overrun) nice progressive operation and slightly less pedal pressure than stock clutch

So would the DFX be overkill, with my engine? Figuring 438 ft/lbs at the rear wheels should be around 500 ft/lbs at the engine. Debating the DFX vs dual friction right now. I looked at the spec clutches, but seem a bit pricey for what I need. What about Mcleod (sp?) or Hayes?

Call me "OLD SCHOOL" if ya like, but my heavy duty Borg & Beck style Hays Clutch handles my 500ft lbs just fine. Wears my leg out....but keeps the ladies from wanting to drive it

To each his own, but I've had one of these long enough that I've stopped trying to convince myself such "benefits". Besides, the start up routines for my SA's various rats have always been such that not just anyone can get them fired up anyway.

Default Clutch

I have a Mcleod Street Twin for sale but the reason its for sale is because I didn't like it. To high of Peddal Presure for My Hyd System and the Clutch was graby. It is Rated at 1200 HP. I have both Aluminum and Steel Flywheels 153 Tooth for it. I replaced it with a Spec Stage 3 Super Twin and I just drove it around the Block for the first time today and it acts like a Stock Clutch but with all kinds of Holding Power. Its a Real work of art all CNC Machined Aluminum Billet. When You Order one from them they don't have any Parts in stock they make them to order as they are ordered. They said they could make it in 3 days but it only took them 2. When it shows up its allready been balanced so no need to send it out. It only takes .300 to Disengage it so You won't have much Pedal travel.

I have a ram B&B style on my 468. It has an iron disc though. The CF will be perfect for yours.
