Default Opinions Needed Please

I know that opinions are worth every penny you pay for them but I need your input please.

I just bought a GM Crate 350HO (330HP/380 Lb. Ft. Torque) engine.

I would like to put Headers on the engine.

Is there, in your opinion, a good, better, best pair of headers for me to consider for this new engine? I have looked at the Jegs. I have looked at the Hookers. I have looked at the Edelbrock. I have looked at the Patriot.

I have patriot style side pipes on the car now but they are coming off the exhaust manifold with a single exhaust pipe and the single output type. Name: Patriot Pipes Left Side.JPG

Size: 1.14 MB I like the side pipe look and sound so a side exhaust would also be a strong consideration.

If you have any recommendations and pictures both would be welcomed.

Thank you in advance.

David, you will get a lot of opinions on this, but, my favorite is the hooker side mount.

I can't wait till the day I can put on a set of side pipes on my 72. If I was ready to buy now I would be in the same boat as you. But I think I would go with the Hooker Side Pipe Headers and I think I like the chrome look better. I have read that the chrome starts to get rock chips and can even start to rust were you get the chips, But I just love the chrome look.

I have that same crate engine in one of my cars (not a Vette). You made an excellent choice. The headers I went with at the recommedation of the speed shop I deal with was to go with Sanderson headers. If you can find better headers, then by all means get them. The Sandersons are made of heavy gauge steel and have the thickest flanges I've every seen on a header...you'll never have a leak.

I had mine ceramic coated...consider doing the same what brand you decide to buy.

You raise a good point and I should share that I bought the Plain and Simple Sheilds from Bangkok Dean here on the Forum and they have eliminated the leg burns on my current set up. (Thanks again!!!)
I hear you loud and clear though, my wife burned her leg in the first week I had the side pipes, not pretty.

Keep those ideas coming guys, I appreciate it.

Hooker side mounts. No comparison, in my opinion. You have one of the few cars ever made that you CAN do this with. Why do anything else? Nothing says "cool" on a C3 like 4" sidepipes. Except sidepipes and a supercharger sticking through the hood, but I digress.

You should strongly consider the covers (made by an aftermarket company) because the burns take a long time to heal, and passengers forget no matter how many times you warn them.

Pictures in my profile. I dont have covers on them now, but some members here do. I am in the process of rebuilding this setup so that will be the last thing.

Shop around and you can save a little, but you are looking at about $1500 for the headers, pipes and (internal) mufflers. Another $450 for the covers, but they are way cool with "Corvette" or "Stingray" laser cut into them.

I also am attracted to chrome, even knowing that it wont hold up as well as the stainless version, but my C3 is not a daily driver.

I see that you are already aware of the covers...the ones I speak of are a bit different, but same idea.

Look one post back and you will see I have the Steel Sheilds. I opted for the new ones called the simple sheilds, they have elongated slits top and bottom, no words.
Thank you.

77Sleeper:

Nice door fitment, did you have that done, or did it actually come from the factory like that?

The rockers panels look good as well. Did you have to get a new set or did you refinish your old ones? The finish on mine is quite worn, but new ones are not cheap!

This is how the car looked when I bought it in August, 2007. I put the side pipe covers over the summer. Brakes seized up over memorial day and so we put her in the garage and started our restoral early. Now comes the engine.

If you like the side pipes that you have now, then consider these Hedman's. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
The Hookers are nicer overall, but you would save a ton going this way.

I have the same engine as you in my '80 and love it. It didn't come alive though until I installed Dynomax ceramic coated full length headers from Summit Racing and true dual pipes. Great value for the buck!
