Options are to use the printed marks on the stock cover, replace the cover with a stamped one with timing marks, or use an after market cover and after market indicator. Make sure you buy the indicator to fit the diameter of the balancer.
The vibration damper has timing marks on it. There is a little tab on the plastic timing cover with a notch in it. Just set the timing so the degree you want it set to lines up with the notch. You could put a little dab of white or yellow paint on the degree mark you want so you can see it better. Which would be on the zero mark if you're using a timing light with the advance **** on it. There's posts on here on how to do it.

I knew someone on the Forum would show me how dumb I am. Was so engrossed in transferring the pointer from my L46 that I did not see the notch on the ZZ4 black timing cover.
Thanks to you all.
Cheers
I find that plastic pointer terribly annoying on my ZZ383. Here's what I did so that I can actually see the timing marker in relation to the #.
I bent a coat hanger (someday I sware I'm gonna write a book called a million and one things you can make out of a coat hanger) with a loop on one end and then several 90 degree bends so that it lines up with the plastic pointer and can actually be seen (wow - what a concept that you'd think GM would have thought to engineer into their disfunctional plastic cover). I only install it when I'm timing the engine and it gets mounted through the loop with a bolt that holds it in place in one of the spare head accessory bolts. I realize this sounds like quite a "rig job" but it works well and it only took me about 5 min. to fab up my custom timing marker. When I'm done I put it in the case with the timing light so I don't lose it. If nothing else works and you still can't get a read on that tab then it's wort a shot.
