Hey bud, in all honesty, don't buy a new one. Have it rebuilt by one of the two best rebuilders on the forum. All you have to do is remove it and ship it to them and they will rebuild it for a fee an send it back better than new.

PM me and I'll give you the contact information.

Definitely true. Take it from a guy that has been down both routes, and get it done right the first time. Talk to one of the guys that Durango Boy recommends, I'm pretty sure I used one of those guys and he did a perfect job.

Hi

I believe that the all fit 63 till 82, but there where definitely small differences in appearance between 63-68 and 69-82.

So, if you want correct type, buy 69-82 for your 74.

Or better, follow the given recommendations and get it overhauled.

The same steering gear was used with power steering as well as manual steering.

There was only one functional change that was made to the steering gear from 1963 through 1982.

Sometime during the 1969 model year a flat was added to the steering gear input shaft. The flexible coupling flange was changed at the same time to include a mating flat. Before that time the input shaft (and the flange on the flexible coupling) had splines all the way around.

A flexible coupling with a flange that has a flat will not assemble to a gear with splines all the way around (beginning of 1969 and earlier).

There were some other minor changes (early cast iron cover was changed to aluminum).

I agree with all the other posters. Have your original rebuilt by one of the forum recommended people, or get the parts and rebuild it yourself. There are some DIY threads here and elsewhere on the Net if you feel up to tackleing the job yourself. Just make sure you get a good quality dial-type 0 to 30 inch/lb torque wrench to properly set the box up with after rebuilding. If your Rag joint is worn now is the time to replace it too.

I would take a different tack. Take the opportunity to change to the "Jeep box" from Corvette steering. Get rid of the original, and get more modern steering.

I bought myself a Jeep box not long after I heard of the conversion and some people making a big deal of it. I did research and looking up patterns and such for doing it all myself.

Then I got a chance to drive a Vette that had the conversion done, and I didn't like it at all. To be honest I liked the tight feel of my stock box, which is still in great shape, compared to the 'swoopy' feeling of the Jeep steering.

I ended up selling the box and abandoned the project.

I'm not saying no one should do it because lots of people DO like it...I think it's best to try and drive one before going through the time and expense to get and install a Jeep box.

Before you rebuild a steering box make sure the main worm isn't pitted. A normal rebuild wont fix your box like new if it is pitted out.

I got a new steering box from Chevy recently. It wasn't listed for all C3/C2 years, rather it was listed for only one year. Flaming River also has a repo.

Jim Shea, glad to see you are still sharing your expertise with us "Bubbas". Saw you had sold your Vette. Are you getting another one?

Hope you come out skiing this year.

I'm too busy shoveling snow here in Michigan. Don't have time for any serious Corvette looking right now.

I will be out in Vail, Colorado the end of February for a week. I hope to visit with Lars Grimsrud for a short time before hitting the slopes. Sorry to see that he isn't doing any "tuning for beer tours" at this time. Quite an amazing fellow.

I am working on a series of papers on the 1967 - 1968 Corvette steering columns. I've learned quite a bit about the differences between the two years. (I initially thought that the two columns were identical but I have since dug into it.) The two columns are identical in overall length but the mounting is quite different.

Jim
