Just had the brakes re built all round on my '80, pads rotors and calipers. Rebuild has done around 7000m.
The pads on all wheels sound like they rattle a little on the pin, particularly over bumps. I don't think there is a clip or return spring on these?
Also a very slight contact/scrape sound which is audible when moving as though pads hang loose and are marginally in contact with rotors and which goes when brakes applied.
Brakes stop the car very well.
This all sound normal?
I have heard that some people leave the piston springs out when the calipers are rebuilt. Where did your calipers come from and did you have them rebuilt?
Here I go into deep water,in my experience with our brakes some noise is going to be there, pads do float.I am an original owner of a 79 ,L 82 car and have had this clicking from day one. Also looked at other cars back when car was new and it seemed to be common. But I have only noticed it on cars at low speed and/or when shifting from reverse to forward gear visa versa and as the car starts to move, you will here pads making a clicking sound. I can not hear any brake noise at speed on my car.As mentioned in last entry those plastic spacers will take up the space and quiet the brake pads.I have them installed in my car and it helps.
DB,
This is an Aussie car, the calipers were sent out to repair which meant re sleeving etc and then replaced by a Sydney brake specialist. Everything was rebuilt and replaced I hope but I can't confirm springs.
I have been told machining rotors on the car is the only way to ensure accurate rolliing spec and it sounds to me like the new rotors may be just touching the floating pads.
Obviously the pads need movement over the pin and it sounds like this is the rattle.
Can't here noise at speed.
Droshki,
See answer to DB, I suspect this is a pad on pin rattle (does the pin wear and allow too much movement?) and pad on disk scrape. Will import the kit as this is an Aussie car.
Thanks.
