Default Running a zz430

I run a zz430 in my '64. You can go beyond the 430 specs. The Fastburn heads are great, but the early word on them was to do no porting on them and that was BS. They can use a bit of cleanup. I beleive that AFR's are better for about the same cost.
The HOT cam is quite mild, but does have fine manners and good vacuum at idle, you can find a Comp or Crane cam that will do better with little loss of manners. The GMPP distributor needs a little help with the advance curve-lighter springs and a vac. can that brings in 10* at idle). You can install thinner head gaskets for a bit more squeeze - use the ones that Sallee uses on their zz383 (I have them on a zz3 and there is no problem with overcompression).
I had a stock M21 with 3:36 gears (now running a TKO 600).
That said, the zz430 goes like heck, I can blow the tires up at will.

I think Sallee makes a ZZ465, ita zz4 shorty with AFR heads and a smallish cam. 465hp.

Yes, still running the 3:36 gears. With the TKO600 RR they are effectively a 3:82 in first gear. I dropped about 800 rpm at 70 mph.
I just got the new issue of Hot Rod today and they have an article on mods to the zz4. I'll have to study it but you need to get a look at what they found.
My son has a zz3 in a Fiero and we're pulling that apart this year for some trans work. I'm sure he's going to make some mods for more HP. It has ported L98 heads right now (he had access to a flowbench at WYO Tech), electric WP, Rams horns that have been hogged out to the max and a full custom SS 2.5" exhaust system. At 2930# it is a rocket. We have also setup the zz3 and the 430 ignitions and carbs to be almost identical (2 jet sizes smaller on the zz3 F & R.)
Both cars run Holley 80508S carbs with a jet plate replacing the original metering plate. The zz3 had run a 1406 Eddy but the Holley runs as good with more power. Tried a Demon 650, couldn't figure the darn thing out and it sits on a shelf.

I'm running a copy of the ZZ430 except I'm still using my 74 Q jet(wanted to use factory air cleaner), shorty Sanderson headers and a 3.70 gear with a mild conveter. The car has very good mid range torque and a nice idle. With full exhaust a spare tire and street tires it runs high 12s and with a 100 shot of NOS I ran 12.15 at 115 mph.
