what would cause the oil pressure gauge to bounce while at idle? but hold steady while driving. the bounce is not on a regular schedule and there is no pattern, it will bounce two or three times then wait a few second then bounce once then then it may not bounce for 30 or 45 seconds. i know its something simple and most likely expensive. thanks for the advice
Are you talking about a bounce down to zero and back again? Mine will flutter around a little bit at idle (40#s, +/- 3#s). C3s did have electric gauges. Maybe that has something to do with it.
If it's a mechanical gauge, like mine is, you're probably a quart low and the pump is cavitating. It could also be a small leak in the line. Advance carries new compression line/fittings to replace your old ones...I just did mine, no more oil leak into the car...
If it's electrical, I'd check the oil level first, then the sender, then check for electrical problems.
My `77 does the same thing. Be driving along carrying around 40 pounds look down and the guage is bouncing up and down. Oil level is fine and it doesn`t go below 40 so I`m not gonna worry about. Especially since I now see others have the same thing happening.
The bouncing gauge seems to be common. I was thinking on mine it was the sender, with a mechanical gauge hooked up temporarily no bouncing and pressure about the same.
i run 40 psi at idle and 60 while crusing. i checked the oil level and it is good. i know it is nothing major but i want to know whats wrong. its the little things that always bother me..
