I can answer this one! The Corvettes didn't use a cable drive speedo(84 up). Here are your two options if you want to retain the cable driven speedo and have a VSS.........http://tpiparts.net/82_92_sensors?start=25. The first one "sensor 802" is your best option. It was originally used on police intercepter cars.
Yes that 3rd one near the bottom is the one I have....4k pulse.....not using one will make the engine hunt at idle...something it's fine about when starting, but when you drive it and pull to a stop, the computer is constantly looking and goes into a hunt mode....and obviously sets the engine light....
I suppose it could be programed around, as I fail to see why the computer need to know the car speed, except to lock the converter....which somehow happens too soon on my car as the computer thinks it 55 mph when actually it's only 40....
need supply your programmer with your tire diameter/rear ratio and of course o/drive ratio...
Tooth count is controlled by the driven gear inside the tranny, not the sensor you are screwing on outside...so if the teeth are not correct for your speedo...this does nothing to correct it....
Markdtn,
What did you use for the VSS in your '69 with the 700R4? I'm doing a speed density setup (ZZ4 with a Camaro ECU) on my '70 and I'm using an '88 Vette 700R4. Did the TPI Vettes use a cable driven speedo with 4K pulse VSS (I think speed density is a 4K pulse)? If not, where did you get the VSS setup? Part number? Not trying to steal the thread but this seems to be as good a place as any to talk TPI turkey.
Stand alone VSS generator that screws inline with the speedo cable. I am using an '82 C3 tailhousing. If you use a BowTie crossmember, you can use any non-electronic tailhousing like Camaro or B-body as the crossmember uses the bolt holes just rear of the pan for the mount. The add on pulse generators are available from Howell, Street and Performance, Painless, etc. Just be sure to get a 4k pulse for speed-density and a 2k pulse for MAF.
Just saw one on ebay 20 min ago real nice all polished with harness computer and everything, it's a no resurved auction and the bid is only 152.00 so far but it looks real nice looking unit
