Default Plug wire routing ??

Hi Guys-
I'm in the process of firing up the 383 in my 75 convertible for the first time and I think I done sumpthin stupid. While it was on the engine stand, I didn't install plug wires in the ignition shielding (the vee shaped things on the sides of the block). Now I've spent 2 days on my back under this thing trying to rout the wires without success. It appears that the wires need to go behind the motor mounts and I probably need to remove the starter. I can't force them behind the motor mounts. Can someone tell me this ain't so or did I learn a valuable lesson?
TIA
Larry

I believe the stock routing for your '75 is the same as mine, and the wires do go under the engine mounts.

You might just have to unbolt the barrel bolts and jack up the engine enough to get the plug wires under the mounts.

Do you have a '75 AIM to verify the correct routing?

Remove boots, thread wires behind motor mounts, and re-install boots.

GM 7-mm, non-HEI set for points/condensor.

That's the advantage of buying universal wires. Route them under the motor mounts, cut to length at the distributor and install the end. Makes for a neat job and easier to do on a Vette.

I would also get universal kit. I have Taylor spark plug wires cut to fit , install with loom supports, good to go. Looks a lot better than routing wires between the engine mounts and winding the #2 wire around the dizzy.

Thanks Guys-
With all the replies in mind, it looks like my best course of action is to buy a universal wire kit and poke em' through where they need to go before putting on terminals and boots. I guess I'm not too old to learn.
Thanks again.
Ya'll Enjoy!

the boots are removeable even on non-universal sets so your not out of luck yet. pull the boots and do your work then put em back on. i suggest you pull the dizzy boots so they are up top and easy 2 get too.

They didn't look removable but then I didn't try very hard, didn't want to tear them. I'll give it a shot Wednesday, can't do it tomorrow, it's our 42nd anniversary so I don't think the missus will let me play in the shop.
Thanks

Remove the boot from the distributor end of the wire. The boots on the plug end are not removeable!!

Routing them 'factory style' is very easy. Working from above and below it shouldn't take more than an hour or so...

Lub up the boots on the distributor end real good with di-electric grease and slip off the boots. Thread the wires between the motor mounts and the block. They DO NO go through the mounts.

For reference: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...e-routing.html

When looking at these pictures keep in mind that I'm using the 'fat' '75+ wires with '75+ style grommets in my '70 style looms. Fat '75+ wires will not fit in the earlier grommets. Also earlier upper looms need very light Dremel work for the later 'fat' grommets to fit.

My wires are a universal fit MSD 'cut to fit' but the instructions work for any wire with removeable distributor boots.

Starting up top run the wires between the block and motor mount:

Working from underneath run the front wires through the oil pan clip and 'V' shields if you have them:

Passengers side...note the wires emerging from behind the motor mount and inserted into pan clips. #2 and #4 can be seen going behind starter:

Drivers side:

Drivers side 1,3,5, and 7 going up the back of the block an into the lower loom:

Passengers side tucking behind starter and going up the back of the block. #6 and #8 clearly visible while #2 and #4 are behind the starter. Wires go into the looms in a particular order as shown in the AIM:

View from above showing routing in both looms. i didnt neccesarrily follow the AIM loom routing but choose the 'cleanest' routing:

Better view of starter area:

Nice and clean up top:

Random pan clip shoot:

Thanks again Guys-
I'm now in the process of putting together an order to Eckler's for clips, looms, and probably wires. And jim2527, It looks like you took extra time and effort to help me out, You made a great guide! I really appreciate it. With any luck at all I will start this thing up in the next week or so. My wife gave me a fire extinguisher for Christmas. She has seen me do this before. When I do it, I'll post an let ya'll know if it blows or goes.
Enjoy!!
