Default 75 vette fuel return line what do you do with it?

I have a 75 vette with a modified 350. I haven't restored a car since I was in high school and I am a little out of practice. My vette has a return fuel line in it. When I put in the new motor my fuel pump doesn't have an inlet for a return, just the fuel in and onto the carb. I figured that I have never done a car with a return on it so if I dont hook it up I just won't return fuel to the tank. I just ran it like I always have. When I started the car, no problems. I got in a drove it around the block and smelled gas. Popped the hood and gas is pouring out of the return line. What do I do with the line? Cap it? Hook it in somewhere else? Help..

I have the same set up as you....the Holley fuel pump only has 1 inlet and 1 outlet set up. I plugged my return line and use a vented gas cap. Haven't had any problems with gas smells or leaks and it's been over 5 years.

I'm not sure, but I think the return line runs to the top of the gas tank...don't know why you're getting gas pouring out of it...unless the tank was full and some of the gas sloshed around and exited the return line when you drove it..

Hope this helps...Good Luck!

How did you plug the line and where? I think that I could just use a small hose to connect to the end of the line by the fuel pump and put a bolt in it. That would look a little rigged up though. How did you cap yours?

The guy that built my motor said that a stock pump wouldn't be enough and I needed about 110gpm. Does anyone make a correct stock replacement that flows more? Thanks for the help!

Why would you trust somebody that makes statements like that to build your motor? The stock pump will support around 600HP.

Take the bubba pump off and get a refund.

I plugged it by 1) finding the least visible location and cut the hose (it was close to the vapor canister 2) inserted a black bolt that was a little larger that the i.d. of the hose 3) tighten it with a hose clamp....looks very professional and not "Bubba'd"

Mine is both a driver and show car, so I'm real particular about the looks as well as the functionality of the repair.

Good Luck!

So I'm guessing you have no idea why it was there in the first place, right?

The fuel return line has nothing to do with venting. Venting is the duty of the EVAP system which has lines that run on the driver's side of the frame.

The return line was used to keep fuel from overheating and vapor-locking. By looping cool fuel to and from the fuel tank, the fuel never had time to vaporize.

Since the return line (and fuel) are below the tank, fuel can find it's way down the line causing a leak if it's not attached to the pump.

I'd find the correct pump. Besides, cooler fuel could add a pony or two.

But if you're set on the performance pump,..instead of using a cut piece of hose and a bolt to block it off, find a 1/4" rubber cap and block it at the tank.

No, I do know why the return line is there and I know what it does...I just prefer the Holley fuel pump...unfortunately, the Holley's I have seen in catalogs only have 1 inlet and 1 outlet. Oh well...
