Hi all,
Does anyone know how to replace the washer pump on these cars ?
I got the old one out by basically busting it and then pulling and twisting.
There is a nut inside the washer resevoir that the pump screw into.
Now, how is it that we are supposed to hold this nut to screw the new washer pump in? The neck on these resevoirs are also curved, so you have no straight shot to the holding nut inside :(
Also even when I did make a contraption with a hose to hold the nut, one cant screw the pump in very much because there is a plastic bracket that gets in the way from you turning the washer pump.
This is nuts...
Do I have to get a new resevoir in order to replace this thing ? :(
I think my '79 has the same bottle as your 81. The way I did it was to pop the neck off the bottle, then use a deep socket on a universal with a long extension. I put electrical tape on the socket to kind of wedge the nut into the socket to hold it in place. I probably worked with the bottle upside down, and feed the extension,u-joint,socket, into it. You might look a little silly doing it, but I think that is about only way it can be done. Just don't wedge the nut into the socket too tight, or you might open a new can of worms. Good luck....
Yes, the neck of the bottle is removable. If you look at it real close, you should be able to see the seem where the two pieces meet. I was assuming you had the bottle out of the car. When I changed my pump, I had the bottle out. If the bottle is still in the car, with a lot of patience, you should still be able to do it. Again, my car is a '79, but I am almost sure the '81's use the same set up. Good luck.......
Re: any idea how to replace this? - UPDATED! (ksems)
new pump is in....
I did have to almost remove the Vapor canister to make room for myself to work.
I unhooked the resevoir but left it "in " the car.
I unhooked the vapor canister lines and dropped it out of the way.
Thanks to previous advice above , I was able to pop the neck of the resevoir off. This gave me a straight shot to the bolt that screws in to the washer pump.
I tipped the resevoir upside down and using a deep socket and extension was able to screw that pesky nut onto the washer pump shaft :)
Was actually not that difficult - just took alot of time :(
