Anyone install the year one 400hp crate engine? If so, what water pump did you use? I thought i could use my original one but it doesnt seem to fit. Too short i think.
I also need to buy a oil dip stick tube, what did you get or how did you ask for it? The block says it is for a 1996 to 2000 engine, what vehicle did you start the search with, a pick up truck motor?
Some time in the early eighties (I think it was about then) GM made the short Corvette pump a little longer than the old short pump. When I put my engine together I used a GM aluminum short water pump, P/N 14011012; to get the belts to align using the original '69 pulleys I had to have this spacer made, it is about 3/16" thick.
Here's a shot of it:
My guess is you are trying to use an "old" pre-change short pump and need a "new post-change short pump. I hope this helps.
Did you change the intake or what hood are you using? I contacted them about their engine and they said the intake wouldn't fit under the stock hood. Just wanted to give you a heads up on it if that's the case.
I just put this engine in my 75. It will not clear the stock hood as someone stated, but as for the water pump I used the one of my l-48. One of the timing cover bolts hit in a spot so i ground it out of the water pump a little and a little off the bolt head since its so long. I didnt want to deal with misaligned water pumps. This may not be the best route, but it works and has been fine so far. I havent figured out the dipstick tube either. I thought about getting a camaro one, but havent. I just stuck an aftermarket on there and measured with new oil in and marked the line where it is full.

I've been looking at this engine also. How much too tall is it for the stock hood?
76project let us know what water pump you go with.
I sent an e-mail to Year one and they sent me this statement.
"The water pump is probably contacting 2 of the special timing chain cover bolts. This is solved by cutting down the bolt heads, leaving enough head so they still be used with a common socket.
The blocks are 95-99 truck blocks, so you might look for that application. We recommend part number MD139 for the dipstick and tube.
Also note, the intake supplied with these engines usually will not work with a stock Corvette hood. "
I am going to try grinding down the bolts. I will get some pictures. On the intake/hood clearance, Others have said that it did work on their vette, I cant tell yet. Crossing my fingers though, don't really want to get another hood.
Im pretty sure you will have to get a new hood. Or else swap intakes. I can post some pics if you want of the clearance issues. The top of the carb(q-jet) is level with the stock hood with a spacer to get the q-jet to fit the bolt pattern. So their is no room for any air cleaner even with a drop base or without a spacer...I tried. Went with a l-88 hood off ebay and now I have plenty of room.
It seemed like it took more than just grinding off some of the bolt head, I had to grind some of the water pump also. The metal in that area is thick enough to take quite a bit out of it.
The engine runs great. I havent driven other high hp cars so I have nothing to compare to. But its quick even with horrible gears and auto, and the carb isnt tuned the best yet.
For my auto I went with a higher stall converter...2500 I think. It idles a lot better now, at first it would stall some, but now its fine. That was also caused some by the carb, I heard the stock converter should work.
I havent put any anti-freeze yet but it seemed like the waterpump fit after i ground down the head of the timing cover bolt. I measured before and i needed 1/4 inch clearance and the head of the bolt was 1/4. There is a shoulder on the bolt still holding the cover on. I hope i never have to take the cover off. The bolt on the left side is the only one that was hitting the pump.
Still cant find a stupid dip stick with out spending $60.00.
Tried a Mr Gasket for Chev pass side up to 1985 and it was too big to fit into the hole.
The problem is the stupid plastic timing chain cover. You can always replace it with an older metal cover and then you will have no problem using the proper Corvette water pump.
