My starter is toast, and the pinion has caused some damage to the flywheel. I need to replace the starter and I have some questions.
1. Can I remove and replace the clutch inspection cover without taking any other parts off especially the oil pan.
2. The small part of the flywheel I could see didn't look too bad, but there were metal shavings and small knicks on the teeth, one tooth had a small chip off the front, how much damage is too much?
3. How do I shim the new starter, I read some instructions and I didn't understand, also I don't have a lot of tools and can't think of a way to turn the engine over to check the clearance 3x.
4. Which starter should I use, I can get a bosch rebuild from pepboys for $33 w/core. My brother has CVR starter on his car, but I can't find anyone locally that sells them. Summit has a high torque mini starter for $140 and MSD starters for $300 or so.

Go to Pep Boys and buy a heavy duty OEM rebuilt starter for your Vette. SHIMs are not necessary with OEM style starters and are nothing but bandages The Bosch starter is a GM starter rebuilt by a licensed re-builder building the starters for Bosch.
You may need a ring gear and the oil pan stays where it at.
