I've got 3.55s and a 700R4, and I really reccommend an O/D transmission to anyone who... owns a car. :) If the car ever drives on the highway, even if for only ten minutes at a time, that O/D gear is really helpful, and it also lets you get a bit nuttier with the gearing. The 3.55s were atrocious on my car w/ the TH-350, but w/ the 700R4 it's very liveable. I consider 3.70's when my better judgement slips. :) Two upgrades Bence definitely needs to do with that beast is put AFR 357s on, and maybe go with a Richmond-6, or another O/D of his choice. The more gears, the merrier. The neat thing about the new Chevy o/d trannies is they act like an M21/22 in the first four gears, then let you relax and cruise in O/D. I honestly don't think any automobile package is complete without an O/D gear.

Steve, Bence definitely doesn't need AFR 357s. No way would AFR recommend those heads for a 468 street car. The 357s are fully CNC ported versions of the 345 head, and they're definitely race car heads. When going with a CNC head, they actually recommend the 315 CNC for a 540! It flows better at high lift than the normal 325 head, and gives better throttle response/intake velocity.
O/D: A 3.08 rear and a 1:1 fifth gear non-overdrive trans will work just as well as an overdrive with a 3.70 on the highway and from the stop light. The problem is that most older transmissions don't have enough gears and spread, not that they're lacking overdrive. Actually, O/D gears are sometimes the weak link in manual transmissions. You have to plan out your gears for the intended use, O/D or not.
I understand your point entirely. :) It's nice to see those big numbers every once in a while, though. Tell me, what is it that makes a big block cylinder head "streetable?" When I look at the numbers, it's definite that the 357s have less low-end, but that "low end" is over 100lb-ft over what one would call "peak" in my motor. :) I will bow out to ya, though, you know a lot more about these things than I do... (Hell, I've never even driven a BB car before. (Haven't lived, in other words.))

Quote: I wish just having a big block was enough, but it isn't. Gordon and Mike69 whipped my butt last year at Etown with their 350's It's all about the package!
Joe that sounds a little personal
Bence Yes I do have a 4 speed. I launch at around 3000 rpm and try to get it rolling then nail it. It hooks sometimes and I spin sometimes. The rear let go because of the spacer I had with the 4.11. I am not to worried with the 3.70 rear. Unless I put on slicks.
If my friend had a pickup truck that truly ran in the 10's or 11's, the thought wouldn't even cross my mind to consider his vehicle more desirable than either of my Vette's. Even if the truck was brand new. A Vette is far more than straight line performance.
However, his credibility is seriously in doubt. Any fish story he (they) tells, cut both the length and the weight in half.

Steve, it's just that DD2000 doesn't seem very accurate when it comes to low end torque in a big block. For example, if you plug in the cam and head stats (which are widely available) for a ZZ502, the program will tell you it makes over 630 lbs of torque at 2000 rpms. GM lists peak torque at 560 at 4200 rpms. Who's full of it? I doubt it's GM underrating their engine!
Big heads on a street engine will produce lazy throttle response (which DD2000 will never show you.) Like you said, those numbers sure are fun to look at! :D I have to keep telling myself that bigger isn't always better...
I know you will read this so take heed. When I was your age I was doing the same thing...gearheading with buddies, working, goin to school, havin' a good time. There was always some a-hole that claimed he was my friend that had no interest in what I was doing. I would always help him with his car, but when it came time to reciprocate...he would always laugh, put me down in front of others...couldn't care less whether I was breathin' or alive. Stop visiting him, stop worrying about what HE'S doing, and pay attention to what you're doing. Just like football...concentrate on what your team (car) is capable of. BTW, dump him...he's not your friend.
Dump these "friends". They are the type that will be jealous of what you have, show no interest in what you have going (as far your project), can't say anything nice, and can TOP anything you say or have. I stay away from people like that. Life is too short. :mad
Just focus on your school work and the progress of your engine. Take your time getting both right, and you will succeed in the end and be happy.
