Default '75 Sloppy steering

Where do I begin to fix the problem of sloppy/ loose steering in my '75? As I drive down the road you can turn the sterring wheel side to side a little each way before the car actually begins to move in the direction wanted.

What you describe is the normal feel for '75 technology.

You can check the front end steering components and bushings for play. Also check the rag joint connection at the input of the steering box from the steering wheel for excessive wear. Keep in mind you will not achieve the rack and pinion feel you get on newer vehicles.

Check out this thread for a lot of good ideas on what to check...
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...h-handing.html

My advice... check the rag-joint and idler arm first...

Good luck GUSTO

My '75 is the same way. Rebuilt the suspension, replaced the idler arm, etc. No change.

I might rebuild the rag joint an gearbox this winter...

You get used to it and it is fairly normal.

the 2 biggest things that I did was replace the rag joint with new gm joint, and had Gary aka gtr1999 blueprint the gear box,, best money spent hands down!!!! bought new idler arm but have not put it on yet, the rebuild on the gear box fixed my problems.

For a stock steering box rebuild go to Gary, above......but there are limitation in the design of the overall system....the valve on the output of the Pittman arm IS IMO the largest problem with the introduction of MODERN tires especially with modern rim diameters....this whole system is something out of the 50's....the vette chassis these cars is on was first in '63 and ran for 20 years....

then we get into the steering ratio....16-1 stock, vs faster ratios for other updates.....more similar to 12-1....

all of the above is good advice in trouble shooting...in addition to all the usuals with any car....

I've had 2 cars (not vettes) that had play in the steering, it was the idler arm in both cases.

Oh, and by gear box........what is that, exactly?

The thing past the rag joint, that you can see under the hood?

I assume that rebuilding and refitting those gears gets rid of slop, due to better fitmint?
