Default Smog inspection

I am a New York State inspector and I always get asked this and other questions:

Please check out this link and talk with your inspection station.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm#BM2535

Any questions as to the removal... the inspector can get the only correct answer from the tech support line of the DMV.

This is taken from the California DMV site:

Does my vehicle qualify for a smog exemption?...

Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is:

Hybrid
1975 year model or older
Diesel powered
Electric
Natural gas powered and has a Gross Vehicle Weight rating of 14,001 lbs. or more.
Motorcycle
Trailer

Good luck

Good point Kevin,
The rules are spelled out in section C of the Texas inspection manual that every inspection station must have.
Visual emissions inspection go back to the 1966 clean air act. A 69 vette came with a PCV valve then and must have one now. Same with cat converters. But Texas does have an exception not requiring cats before 1984. A 1983 Caprice without a cat will pass visual safety inspection but will fail because it affects the CCC emissions system. Specificely the computer controlled air management valve for the A.I.R.
A 78 Vette will pass emissions and safety without a cat because it is not a 3-way cat and not computer controlled engine. If the 78 Vette without a cat had to go thru tailpipe emissions testing( it is now exempt, over 24 year old) it would pass emissions and safety but will fail because of high NOX gases emiting from the tailpipe.
As Kevin said talk to the inspection station. Don't take their word for it, have them look it up. They must look it up in the inspection manual not the CASS reference guide.

As all states are Federal regulations as a guidline... California has the tightest regulations and other states are starting to follow these as well.

Tru dual can be done, but all items must be 'approved' replacements and pass the 'smog' portion of the inspection.

I also work at a parts store and often see replacement items 'not approved' for California emmissions.

Don't give up hope, just get a good helping hand from someone in California who knows the proper regulations.
