Default Intermittent Backfire(afterfire)

All,

First I must thank everyone for all your help, these thread have really helped me solve a lot of issues with my vette over the years.

I have been having an intermittent problem with, really, afterfire (flames shoot out tailpipes). When I first start it, of course it is a little rough and I have to nurse it along till it warms up a little. Then it will purr like a kitten, runs really great...But then it will start afterfiring, flooding out, won't idle. Wait till the next weekend to start troubleshooting it, and runs just great..

Last night my girlfriend and I decided to run down to the corner store just to get a little road time on it (stays in the garage all the time). Drove there, not problem, started it to drive back and the afterfiring started again. Got so bad, it blew a hole in the muffler. Got it home and pushed it back up in the garage...had a few beers to drown my blues...

Today, it will not idle long enough to get a light on it to check the timing or even just idle for that matter. Think that it could be the distributor points....I am thinking of changing up to the Eckler's HEI distributor (been wanting to do it anyway) just so I can elimate that as an issue...is that a good idea? Or is there something else I should be doing?

1968 350, everything is stock...

Thanks,
Shu

Does it smell like raw gas? I'd bet the float in the carb is saturated and it's running so much gas in it can't burn it all. After that, an igintion problem- bad plug wires or a bad plug. The only way I see the dizzy being a problem is maybe a bad condenser- not enough of a problem to make me buy a whole new distributor for.
