Default intake and carb question

i was thinking about putting an aluminum intake and carb on my 76 with a stock 350 and true duals , hopfully this holds me, untill i can aford to buy a crate engine, in about a year, or two, my question is what intake and carb. i am going to put headers on, and would perfer a carb that could be reused when i am able to purchase the alternative engine. im not for sure exactly what i gain from the headers, intake and carb, but should be that much more enjoyable this summer. any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Intake, headers and carb and heads determine how well the engine breaths along with cam lift and duration. The carb that probably came with the car is a Quadrajet, a very good carb when tuned properly. The Edlebrock 2101 is a good aluminum intake with better numbers than the stock GM unit, the factory put them on in 80 and 81.
True Duals will also help the engine breath better, 2 1/2" will do all you need unless your going all out race.
As long as your doing the intake and all that, throw annother couple hundred in there with a cam and lifter upgrade. That will get you by until you can build the motor you want. Of course at that point your nearly there. Once your ready a good rebuild and a set of good heads (AFR, Brodix, Vortek etc..) and your at 300+ HP

Keep in mind that you will run into hood clearance issues if you go bigger then the edlebrock performer intake manifold.

What are the numbers on your original carb? I might be interested in it if you go another route... could help offset your cost a little...

If your car has the factory carb and intake keep them. They are good pieces up to 4,800 rpm or so. No reason to change them if you run the stock cam. The Edelturd 2101 will disappoint you. I bought one when they first came out and was comepletely disappointed with it. I had it on a '76 Camaro - 350 w/ headers, 218/218/.460 / 110 cam, q-jet, 462 heads, 4-spd and 3.23 gears. With the stock intake the car would burn the tires for half a block -from a 10 mph roll -and push you solidly back into the seat. Ran 13.90s @ 100 mph. It was a blast to drive! The E-turd took away almost all the low end torque and lost 2/10s and 2 mph in the quarter mile - no amount of tuning would bring the numbers back, they were gone, plus the car was not near as much fun to drive. I put the old intake back on and the previous performance returned. Keep your q-jet if it runs good and drop some .052 rods in the secondary side (they're cheap and easy to install) and adjust the air valve for best performance when stomping it in. If you haven't already, curve the timing to 35 to 38 degrees total, all in by 2,800 rpm or so. If your running a low compression motor with an automatic and gears numerically lower than 3.23 you can run 38 total timing and all in by 2,200. This way you'll also keep the money until the new motor is in and who knows what new carb / intake may be around by then?
