LT1 HP upgrades while maintaining stock appearance?
I plan on removing the original engine from my '70 LT1/ZR1 and storing it for safe keeping. The idea is to build a restoration engine for the resto project that looks and sounds completely stock from the outside (including running the factory AIR system), but warm it up as much as possible and still pass NCRS judging.
What's the fun of having an M22, F41 and 456 posi if you can't exercise them? Any suggestions for parts/processes that will get me where I want to go? (And that's deep into the 12's)
You can bore / stroke a small block to the max (say 427 or 434) which can probably get by NCRS, but to take advantage of all those cubic inches and to get deep into the low twelves you are probably going to have to use a non-stock intake, aluminum heads, and exhaust tube/tuned headers which would probably get caught by NCRS.
Any bigger stroke than 3.75 will defintly need a different oil pan. That limits your build to a 383. You can port stock head castings a lot. You can extrude hone an LT1 intake and exhaust manifolds a lot and go with 2 1/2" exhaust and straight through mufflers. You can go with a solid retro roller cam. It will look totally stock and probably get close to 450 HP. Should get you well into the 12's with a 456 gear and different tires. I have a set of 64CC LT1 over the counter heads available. Dates don't get judged
