Just cut it, I did it many years ago with a dremel. If you want to keep your original console in the event that you restore the car at a future date then just purchase a reproduction console and cut that. I think one of those costs about $80, or atleast it did when I went through this. To put things in perspective you would have to screw up atleast 3 reproduction units to make the custom console seem like a better alternative.

I've been toying with the very idea for several months now, only a more dramatic change. I was interested in putting a navscreen/dvd/ipod stereo in...these are about 7x4 inches on the face. Here is what I am proposing (have an 82 BTW)...sorry for no pictures.

Leave the air duct at the top of the console.
Cut the gauge cluster area out.
Place nav unit where the gauges used to be.
Place a/c unit where they old stereo face used to be.
Make cup holder where the a/c unit/ash tray sits.
Move the gauge cluster to where the glove box currently is.
Remove glove box +/- door.
Find somewhere else to store my gloves....or whatever 3 tiny things would actually fit in there.

Any thoughts?

Check the depth behind the gauges for enough room for the nav unit.

That's a pretty ambitious mod. If you really want Nav, it might be easier with a fold up/out screen. Or, JVC has a single din nav unit but you have to add a speed sensor/vss.

Here's what I did for some ideas. As mentioned before, JVC has a "sister" unit to this one that includes NAV.
