Default 75 corvette rear bumper replacement

I have a 75 vette, the rear bumper needs to be replaced. I bought a used bumper that supposedly came off a late 76 to 79, (the corvette emblem is correct for these years) but the bumper will not mount correctly, it will not come up far enough to mount on the body, it seems to be the bumpers that are on each side of the license plate that is keeping it from going high enough to meet the top edge of the body. Is there some modification that has to be done to get it to line up with the body.

the corvette emblem is correct for these years.

The 1975 emblem is not the same as 1976 and up. I bought a new trueflex bumper with the correct indented letters for my 1975. I had little trouble installing it, but, you have to remember, each corvette is different at the body lines. So, you will need to do some bodywork to make it fit nice. I wish I new how to post pics. I think you would agree on how nice it fits and looks when you do the little extra.

Positive proof that the cars while supposedly the same dimensions are not!

I’m not sure I would have purchased a used urethane cover for the car (you didn’t say if it was rubber or urethane), but if you did it may crack when you try to pull it to where it belongs.

Is this a fiberglass or flexy glass bumper cover, if so you will need to make mods to the rear bumpers of the car. If you purchased a urethane cover in reality it should fit just as the original bumper did, but this is not a reality sometimes with either cover.

Willcox Inc.

If you have fiberglass or flexyglass here is one of the help page text from our web site.

After removing the existing rear bumper center your new TRU FLEX onto the rear upper deck and clamp in place.

Check the alignment of your TRU FLEX Bumper with the quarter panels. If extra adjustments are necessary, several things can be done. The slots that are started in the upper corner and at the belt line areas of the inside mounting flange can be ground deeper to allow the sides of your TRU FLEX Bumper to be moved in or out to match most cars. In some extremely rare cases the rear wheel splash shields may have to be separated from the under body of the car to allow the quarter panels to be positioned to match the contour of your TRU FLEX Bumper.

Your TRU FLEX Bumper may be built up with any polyester based resin or filler. Once an acceptable fit has been achieved, clamp your TRU FLEX Bumper in place and mark the mounting holes on to the mounting flange of your TRU FLEX Bumper by transferring the locations in the rear upper deck and rear quarter panels. Your TRU FLEX Bumper can easily be drilled with a normal steel drill bit.

Check the fit of your TRU FLEX Bumper before preparing it for painting by actually bolting it to the car. Either factory retainers or replacement bolt kits may be used to attach your TRU FLEX Bumper.

INSTALLATION TIPS PLEASE NOTE!!: TRU FLEX Bumpers are rigid enough to hold their own shape. The use of factory retainers is optional but we suggest the special install retainer kits for 28.95.

The inner reinforcements that were originally used to support the rear lights SHOULD NOT BE USED * when installing your TRU FLEX Bumper! They cause inward pressure and using them may distort the shape of your TRU FLEX Bumper.

The lights should be bolted directly to your TRU FLEX Bumper. The lower, outer frame extensions that were used to support the bumperette area of the original Urethane bumper cover may need to be modified to allow a proper fit. The main purpose of these extensions was to assist in the support of the stock bumper. They do not need to make contact with your TRU FLEX Bumper. *74 Rear Bumpers use the factory light bracket. DO NOT USE BAKED ON FINISHES!!!! Doing so voids any and all warranties.

If your trying to keep the car original you are probably out of luck. Replacement urathane bumpers do not have the correct indentations that are needed for the C O R V E T T E letters that were used on the 75. I also would suggest not to go with a used bumper as the old bumpers become brittle and will crack. When I removed my old one from the car I set it on the garage floor and everday it would have a new crack in it.

If your trying to keep the car original let me know and I will tell you how I achieved this.

I actually grabbed the rear bumper on my 75 and pulled it off in pieces, it was all crumbly.
I bought a new fiberglass bumper that fit perfectly on the R side but was 1/2 too big on the L side. Turns out, the car had been hit and the quarter was stuffed with bondo. Also, the body had sagged on the frame so badly that the hard glass bumper was sitting on the bumper and rode 1/2 too high. I still have the bumper for sale.
You can see where the 1/4 is pushed in. The old bumper had been pulled in with it.

Bumper is for sale for $250

Hey guys, I am hoping for some advice regarding these tru flex covers. I just put new front and rear ones on my 75. The front matched up almost perfect. The rear is a good one half inch out on the right side and slightly out on the left. I was told this is common and to build up the quarters with body filler to match the width. Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.
