with my 79 vette it doesn't really start to really pull until i hit 4000rpmi talked to a guy in the local speed shop and he said to try liter springs in the vacumnopener for the secondry,s does this sound right
I think you should check your timing first...
You should have about 36 degrees ( initial + mechanical ), all in at 2800-3000 RPM.
If you are more than +/- 2 or 3 degrees from these values, or if you get it at too high RPM ( too late ) it could explain this kind of problem...

Engine size?
Camshaft -duration at .050 and lift?
Heads?
Compression ratio?
Trans type?
Rear gear ratio?
Carb number?
Ingition type and timing numbers?
Intake manifold?
Last tune up?
What do the plugs look like?
Manifold vacuum at idle? - this will help determine how big the cam is.
