Default Air filter lid/cover:

Would anyone know where I could find a replacement air filter cover/lid, (open type) that would fit a 1980 L82. I was also looking at K&N's top filter lid's, but they don't seem to have one that would fit, so they say.

Any help would be great.

I just got one from Jegs- and then saw it a week later in the new Summit catalog. Its a real quality piece made by K&N, with the correct diameter, chrome surround, and open purple cotton filter top. Its made for the "large" GM air filters of the 70's and 80's. It looks excellent and alway gets compliments- and you can feel the air sucking thru the top. You'll need the standard round K&N for the inside- and the lid fits snugly on it. The filter top is slightly taller that the stock top and the standard center screw- to the carb- is not long enough. But the new filter lid comes with a much longer replacement screw. I used a hack saw to cut it down to the correct length for my 80 vette. I have a taller L88 hood, but I suspect that the new filter lid will also fit under a standard hood.

I have the OEM replacement filter from K&N, part # E-1500 in now. I've talked to K&N, but they are not recommending any filter like you speak of. Could you please give me the part number that you are using? Also, how much taller is the K&N filter lid over the OEM lid? I have the stock hood, and the height could be a problem.
Is the L88 hood like the one used on the 79, where the scoop was higher? I like that look much better over the hood they came on the 80's.
Thanks,

The 68-71 stock open element units will probably fit.

I don't think so. The late 60's and early 70's air filter covers for vettes had a smaller diameter- 14 inches I believe. The later ones are larger. The Jegs Catalog shows the K&N lid I bought on page 215Y, part no. 599-66-1201.....69-95 GM...$84.99. It appears to be about 1/2 inch taller than the stock lid. I suspect it will just fit under a stock corvette hood- especially 80-82. Measure your space with a piece of clay on top of your stock air cleaner- close the hood and see if its not flattened. I have plenty of clearance with my L88 hood, and this give it more air to breathe.

Thanks for the help Jim. I have been looking at that lid. You purchased the 66-1201 which is chrome, and the 66-1202 is in black steel. If it isn't but a 1/2 higher than my OEM it will work. The photos on K&N's website made the lid look much higher.
What exactly is the L88 hood and the differnce from the stock like on a 80?
Thanks

The L88 hood is styled after the 69 big block hood. Its taller, and looks mean. Do a search on the forum- there are lots of pictures. I got mine from Vancors Corvette in Louisiana. Good luck with your lid.
