I have a stock 82 crossfire that I would like to make engine improvements to. I would like to stick with the crossfire for now, but have heard nothing good about the heads on these engines. I have a set of 14011034 bowtie heads that I would like to use, but don't know if they would be compatible with the engine as is. Would I need a larger cam to make these work? Would they work with the crossfire intake? I'm a novice looking for advice. I just purchased the 85 fuel pump as everyone says it makes a big difference and I just installed a brute thunder coil and an accel 35363 module. Thanks for your time.
The aftermarket head of choice for the CFI seems to be the Dart Iron Eagle 165cc port with 72cc chamber. It keeps the port velocity high so you dont lose low RPM torque, , keeps the compression similar to OEM so you dont screw up the CFI ECM, but has more efficient burn characteristics.
Edelbrock has a 165cc port with 72cc chamber also I believe.
Be aware that if you want to use 1.6RRs, then the heads need some machine work, as stated over on the CFI vault.
-Port your CFI intake while you at it
-upgrade your exhaust
improved cat or test pipe
lower backpressure mufflers
headers of some type Stand Tri-Ys or McJacks maybe
-85 fuel pump
-2030 or 2040 cam
-1.6 Roller Rockers
-DCS fuel pressure gauge and bump pressures to 13PSI, maybe 14 if your daring
-remove smog if possible
