I spoke to a Jasper Engine representative and they will rebuild my engine for $2,100 for a long block. The engine comes with SR torquer heads, Hyper pistons, moly rings, a dual pattern cam similar to the XE256 and a steel crank. They advertise 300hp and 365 LB Torque. I didn't think that was bad for the price and also has a 3yr 75k mile warranty. All this was standard except the steel crank which was $150 more. Any thoughts? They'll also do a short block for $1,400 which isn't a bad deal either. Any body use Jasper before?
I think your going to regret getting only 300 hp., I would really shoot for 350 to 400 ponnies or more. I would check to see how much more it would be to bump it some.
Your probably right and A friend of mine says the same thing. I could always get the short block for $1,400 and put my own cam(XE262) and heads(sportmanII). Its just theres only a limited warranty then just on parts. I also thought the 360 pounds of torque would make real streetable engine.
Yeah I really like that motor but the cast pistons and very expensive intake made me look elsewhere. I've always heard not to use cast alum with more then 300hp. Not that I could tell you why.
I'm probably beating a dead horse here but I would try to get enough ponnies under the hood to beat a stock Z28 on the street. :yesnod:
I guess what I'm saying is that after you drop the coin for a motor, I wouldn't want to be intimated by a stock Z28/SS or Mustang GT/Cobra street light to street light. I not endorsing street racing  but it happens (at least in my dreams).
Remember Penny Wise, Pound Foolish. Don't short yourself. On a project like this the hardest part is doing the work. If you are going to spend $2000+ for a crate engine, spend the little extra and get something you'll be happy with for a long time. If you don't you'll kick yourself in the rear for a long time.
There isn't anything wrong with the Jasper setup but, I know if you are like most of us car geeks, you'll always wish you had more POWER! Get enough to wake yourself up.
Re: Jasper Long Block opinions please (Smokehouse69)
Yeah I know. Thats kind of why I put this out. I needed some reinforcement. I was thinking I can always upgrade when the warranty runs out. But your right thats stupid I should do it once and do it right.
Jasper rebuilt my 350. I think they call it a class 3 which is a 350 horse engine. If I had to do it over again I wouldnt. But not because of anything Jasper did per se. I wanted a car that was quick from 0 to 60 and could care less about top end. What I got with their engine was just the opposite. Slow off the line and hell bent for leather after 3000 rpm. It has a 292 duration cam which is tough on vacuum and old vettes need all they can get. I have a TH 400 with shift kit which helps a little but a manual tranny would be much better with this setup. In the mean time I need to change torque converter and jets in the carb and maybe a different setup on distributor to make this car run the way it should. I'm also getting ready to pull the heads due to a little smoke on startup and a badly fowled plug. A waranty mechanic for Jasper told me they had some bad valve seals in the heads, but of course when I learned about it my warranty was up. Jaspers web page should have the data on this engine.
I used to work for a large contracting company and they used Jasper engines and trannys and we never had any problems which is why I let my now disapeared mechanic talk me into this engine.
i was a jasper engine dealer for about 5 years and we did approximately 100 or so motors and only one came back....thats saying something...but for whats available now through chevy with the zz4 and such id go that route first.
Hey Tony:
We have a Jasper long block in the car. Had it put in last March. Previous owner killed the car. Let's call it a Corvette Rescue. Never give a lawyer a vette. Don't have a clue.....
Our mechanic told us about Jasper and the warranty is what sold us. 3 year 70,000 miles. It is a 350 I do believe it is 220 hsp. It is a great motor. Makes the previous owner green :cry with envy, he sees the car all over the place. In parades in our small town along with our car club. We have had zero problems with the car. :D
We finally have 5000 miles on the engine and I went to pure synthetic oil. That made a difference as well. Car runs cooler and I drive it 500 miles a week to and from work and with the wife on the activities committee the car is going non stop. :reddevil
Just my opinion. Never been happier. Glad our mechanic talked us into the new motor. I have taken on a couple " tangs " and waved Bye Bye as I went flying past them.
Sounds like Jasper is worth looking into. I too am looking for a lot of low end torque even with my 4 speed. I drive my car mostly on windy back roads and deserted highways. Also I do have to pass a sniffer test. It pretty tame for 1975's but I don't thing a 427 would work for me. Besides since I think its the original motor I'd like to use it. I just started tearing the motor down if you'd like I'll keep everyone posted. If my motor held out I was going to put SR Torquer heads and a XE256 in it anyway. Which is almost exactly what they use.
