Hi,
I'm having problems with the choke on my 81 and have tried going thru the old posts but still haven't tracked down the problem. The choke light stays on constantly and the fast idle wont kickdown. Checked the choke heater fuse and it was good. When I unplug the blue wire from the choke coil, the choke light goes out. When I unplug the alternator, the light does not go out. With either of the wires unplugged, the fast idle still wont kickdown. Any ideas on what to check next? The choke relay?
Thanks,
Ron

Are you getting 12 volts at the wire that plugs into the choke? (Unplug the wire, hook a volt meter positive lead to the wire's plug, negative lead to groung/ block, turn on ignition and check voltage).
Do you have Lars' Q-jet choke set up paper? If not ask and I'll send it to you. Go through it step by step, it works.
Finally, you may have a bad choke coil. If so, you should discover it during the set up.
I had a similar issue with my '80. I busted the pigtail going to the choke, so bought a new one and the light still stayed on. I eventually bought an $11 Choke relay which got rid of the light being on all the time and the choke started working properly. For an $11 relay and easy access to it in the center console, I'd try that.
Funny. As I started trying to figure this one out, I noticed that my connector at the choke heater was also busted, so I replaced it. I do have 12V on the blue wire at the choke heater if that helps diagnose. If I could find a choke relay locally, I would have tried that by now, but it looks like something I'll have to order since no one around here seems to have it in stock. Any further suggestions or ideas now that we know I have power to the choke heater? Thanks!

I used to have a 84 trans am that did this all the time. I know not the same car but it had that feedback carb like yours. It started when its original alternator started getting ready to go. I bought a cheap pepboys alternator and the choke light still stayed on and the high idle was there as well.
Then I bought a new GM correct 94 amp alternator and the choke light went out immediately. I'm not sure what the alternator has to do with the choke light or if the 81 vette can act the same as my old trans am.
