The key switch just arms the system. Key slot horizontal = off. Vertical slot = armed. If either door or hood is opened while the alarm is armed, there should be a horn making noise (near the fuel tank).

If when armed and a door or the hood is open then the most likely culpret would be the alarm horn. It is located on the left side of the fuel tank. This area is highly vunerable to moisture. I would put a test light across the wires that connect to the horn. This will tell you if it is the wiring or the alarm horn.
Good Luck

If you are not getting anything it could be a ground somewhere. There is a flasher type unit in the jack storage unit behind the passenger seat. That is what makes the horn sound. Try arming the car and listen to the flasher unit, you should hear clicking at least. If you dont hear clicking you may have a problem with the switch if you do hear clicking i would check the alarm horn. It is different than the steering wheel horn. On my 76 it is behind the driver side rear tire above the muffler. Mine was pretty rusted and the ground was no good.

The alarm in my 75 was broken when I got it...the wires connected to the key on the inside of the fender were rusted off. When I connected them back up and checked my system the car wouldn't start...the hood sensor was shorted, so I replaced it...car still wouldn't start. I eventually traced the problem to the alarm controller...it was fried. I replaced it with a new system that included a motion sensor, remote entry, remote accessories, etc. It would have been nice for the original system to work, but I'm actually happy that it was unsalvageable.

Here's what I did, glassed in the hole. When I want an alarm, I'll buy a good aftermarket one.
