My 72 small block 350 (currently in restoration) and no where near street ready will need the carb rebuilt prior to completion. Currently there is a Holley on there but i do not know much else about that carb. In one of the boxes that came along with the car was a Rochester, possibly the original but again i do not know how to date Carbs. As i know less than nothing about Carbs, and have far too many other projects in store for Winter and Spring i want to see my options for sending the Rochester off to a professional. Or should i concentrate on the Holley instead?
Is there a recommended shop or person i should look for? Local shops? Somewhere out of Hemmings, etc? About how much would something like that cost? I am looking for "out of the box, ready to run rebuilt" all i have to do is bolt it back on the block, is that even an option? My motor starts but the carb is seriously shot so it will not stay running on its own very well. Once the carb is replaced i can worry about less important improvements as at least i'll have piece of mind the car starts and runs. Any ideas or thoughts about past experiences? Thank you!
my 75 has a factory rochester,i had to have it rebuilt it cost me$195.00
and that was with it on the flow bench.i took it to pinellas carbs. in tampa fl .put it on the car after it was done and fired right up with no adjustment needed. i would suggest somebody who only does carb work
If ya go on Google try to put in something like, carburetor rebuild space and then your mail code like 92913 or whatever yours is and you should find something. I had a great shop complete rebuild in and out for$160.
It's best to find a place that specializes in carbs because joe blows mechanic has no idea what their doing.
Good luck
well my biggest question was the out of box runability; I know of two shops in the northern IN area. I'll give them a shot and go from there. Is it feasible to just drop off the carb as is or should I worry about prepping at all? That Rochester looks pretty old and neglected
Thanks for all the input and suggestions. I feel confident seeking out a local Carb shop and handing them the Q-jet as is. I rarely shy away from a "challenge" but this 72 has plenty of challenges in store for me...i'll take the easy way out and least get her running first.
Question? Do you want it rebuilt or restored or both. I am currently having my 71 Holley rebuilt and restored by Jerry MacNeish at Camaro Hi-Performance for NCRS judging. Cost is $315. They run it on an engine and set it before returning. I have seen Jerry's work and it is top notch. Look at his website www.z28camaro.com. Hope this helps.
Restoration isnt a requirement in my case as the motor is not the original for the car. I am not even sure of the Rochester's origins. I am more concerned with a good running problem and ease of installation. Lord knows if i tried to rebuild AND tune...the car may never get the undercarriage completed as planned
I thought I read on here Lars (who ever that is) quit working on carbs?
He still works on carbs,From his posts and members that have work done by him, He is a true master. I do not have his e-mail but some here do. He just isn't a member here anymore. I have opinions about this but I will not post.
