Will a '71 stock rearend and M-21 trans hold up to a stock ZZ454 with normal street tires? I definitely want to put in a TKO-600 at some point, but want to know if putting a ZZ454 in my car w/ the stock driveline is a bad idea. I won't put slicks on the car and I'm not taking it to the track...it will be purely driven on the street. I figure if I "ask too much," the tires are just going to spin anyways, thus not catching and snapping the diff in half. Is this a correct/safe assumption or can I not put this engine in my car until I get a TKO? Thanks guys!
Summarizing posts about this issue, posts by people with actual experience...the stock diff/rear suspension with street tires will start to be marginal with 620 HP, but if you don't power shift the tranny I think the experts will agree your diff will stay alive.
Also, consider the Richmond 5 speed. It comes with a 5th gear at 1:1 or a 5th gear at 0,77:1.
I'm planning on keeping the engine stock for a while and maybe down the road do some minor upgrades, but I don't plan on going anywhere past low 500's on street tires. I also will never powershift. I'd love to get a Richmond right now, but I don't have enough $ for both, so the Richmond will have to wait (although that's the next big upgrade I'll do whenever the time is right).
Also, anyone still know about the water pump issue? And also, is my conclusion about the fuel pump correct? Thanks a bunch guys!

I have had my 69 w/ZZ454 for about 3 weeks now. My car is a coupe, that came with L-36(427 4bbl) and 4spd. My set up is original. I have these upgrades; a Holley 870, headers, and upgraded ignition. I've put about 100 miles on it, and I can say the thing runs great. I cannot say I've given it real punishment, kinda keeping the tach below 3500-4000. I had an issue with the alternator(had to replace it), and my hood keeps vibrating loose- scary when that pops up at 60 mph!!!

Whoa...so what's causing that? Also, do you have any idea which air filter, water pump, fuel pump your mech used? Naturally I forgot to ask him that stuff when I called him, but just thought I'd ask before I bother him.

Im looking at my reciept, here's what it reads: water pump-SHORT DESIGN #WP366, high volume fuel pump CHROME #12835.
We had to get a new hood(no clearance withe the original), I went thru Ecklers for that, and the problem is that the connecters(same hardware from original hood)don't seem to latch firm enough, so the hood will pop up, and when going over 60mph, the L-88 hood has that high part that makes great lift
I can't find that water pump part number anywhere (not even sure of manufacturer). I did find the fuel pump though, so thanks for that!
Does anyone know what size pilot shaft the ZZ454 uses? After I stopped being search-impaired on Jegs, I've found several short water pumps, but they have varying pilot shaft sizes.
