I’m in the middle of rebuilding my Muncie M20. I bought the rebuild kit and DVD from 5speeds.com. I’ve got the entire transmission disassembled with the exception of 2nd and 3rd gears, which are pressed on.
I don’t own a hydraulic press, so I approached two different transmission shops to see if they’d press them off for me for $20. They weren’t interested and one of them said that that’s part of what they do that’s specialized (i.e. they’ll rebuild the trans for me, but won’t help me do it).
Long story short, does anyone have a suggestion how I should proceed? I could just skip replacing 2nd and 3rd gear synchro rings. The current ones are ok, but it seems a shame to not replace them when I’m so close.
Any military friends? They normally have access to auto shops on base. If in good with any of the local car dealerships they all have presses. Harbor freight and other suppliers offer a relatively inexpensive press.
Harbor freight for a cheap press unless someone from SD steps up to help, you'll use it for assembly too. You'll be using that press for a lot of stuff if you own a Corvette.
buy a press, I got mine at a swap meet for 85$... I have needed it 3 or 4 times.. its great for ujoints, bushings, and to 'unbend' things... as well as gear pressing...
At Vtechcorvette.com we have three presses 10 , 20 and 45 tons. I would say the 10 ton press gett 85% of the use.
So I would agree buy $90 dollar press and you will use it over and over.
You can buy a press or try a local auto parts store. When I was a younger guy I worked in a parts store and we did ujoints, bearing, etc on our 20 ton press for a couple of bucks. There has to be a decent shop in your area, I believe there are some CF or other forum members near you as well. Another trick is to tap the main shaft on a solid piece of hard wood on the floor. This will sometimes loosen the gears but most times you need a press.
Same deal if needed, send it to me and I'll press it off for.The shipping would be more then a shop would charge though. Forget the shop that wants the whole job, god how hate shops like that, and people wonder why I'm not crazy about some shops!
I just did the same rebuild for the first time. I bought the same video and thought it was pretty good. Becarful when you put the reverse linkage back together during reassembling, I though the video was a little weak on that part.
I used two blocks of steel on the floor and pounded with a 3 lb sledge hammer. I was careful, but firm blows. Had a helper hold the shaft and steady everything. Worked out fine.
I decided to go ahead and buy a press. Harbor Freight has a nice 12 ton press with plates for $119. Seeing that I would need to press two gears off, press them back on, press the extension bushing and the speedo gear, it just made sense. Eventually, I'm planning to rebuild my trailing arms, so I'm sure I'll use it then as well.
Thanks for all the offers and suggestions. I'll post once I get it back in the car.
