Anyone know how much R-12 needed for early 76 (larger compressor) air conditioning? I still have 3 cans left but don't know if it is enough. Have to replace the line to the compressor. It hisses at me when it is bumped. Still some freon in system but almost done (will be when dis-assembled).
around 3 lbs would be my guess, should be on the sticker. or search for "capacities" it would be a good time to change over to r134a but if your 3 cans will do it, might as well use it
Where is your leak? I had same problem with my 76. A service bulletin was issued that year titled "HEATER HOSE CLAMP INTERFERENCE WITH A/C EVAPORATOR INLET PIPE". That caused my problem-rubbed hole in my pipe. You can Google it and see the bulletin along w/a drawing.
Your 3 cans will be enough. System usually takes about 2lbs7oz + oil.
When adding freon run engine at approx1800rpm & add till sight glass runs clear. SInce you have the old A6 compressor be forwarned the front seal of the compressor is probably leaking as well.
When system is evacuated replace the front seal.
If there s still a charge present your have local A/C serice shop draw down your system(recycle the freon).
Usually for a small fee they will recover your freon, note the amount drawn out. Then when repairs are done they will "give you back" your freon.
May cost the normal service fee. I've done this for many customers over the years
