Default Flat Top Pistons

Can I use regular or mid-grade gas in a 383 with 6" rods and flat top pistons? The heads are stock 64 cc GM cast iron. I have a lathe to dish the pistons for a lower cr. If I retard the timing slightly can I use the flat top pistons without dishing the pistons?
Thanks 68 Vetteman

Gonna need a little bit more information, how thick is your head gasket, how below the deck of the block are the pistons, what cam are you using, what compression ratio do you think you have now, do your pistons have 2 or 4 valve relief and how many cc's are the reliefs?

Odds are if you have a decent lopey cam and you might be able to get away with mid grade.

I don't have that info. I am looking up parts for a future build. I will use a stock 350 block, forged 3.75 stroker crank, forged connecting rods and pistons, and stock gaskets. I have a Comp-Cam# CS XE268H-10 ,@ .050, duration is intake 224 ,exhaust is 231. Pistons would be 4 valve relief.

Since you are starting from scratch, use two valve relief pistons or you may even need small dished pistons which work excellent with small chamber heads. Just do your math and target your compression approximately 9.75:1 with that cam.

Thanks Scott. The pistons I am looking at are flat tops but the CR is too high. Can I cut a shallow dish to lower the CR to what I want? The engine will be balanced by a machine shop.

Stick with the flattops and go with AFR 75CC heads.

How did you figure your compression?
