On the 69 there are 4 louvers on each side of the car. 3 are functional and one is non functional. The non-functional louver has a solid section inside of it which is approximately 2-inches inside the outside of the car. My question is what color should that solid section be? some say that it should be the body color and others say that it should be black. Does any body have a 69 that was never repainted that can tell me what the color should be.
The rear louver fiberglass was painted Black! I've always painted them this color but just to make sure I looked at the Fact Book. There is a picture of one on page 71 in which it clearly shows the last louver painted black. The car pictured is a lighter colored car and I'm sure if it were body color it would show up!
Mine isn't painted and your right it does look much better painted.
BTW, the chrome surround was an option for the 69 so not all left the factory with them, although I'm sure most 69s have them now.
I knew that, but your probably correct they all have them now and with a new window sticker as proof...Some 68`s too....Ya know one of those early or late popular crossover options.......
Satin or semi gloss what ever one I had at the time. It may depend on the brand of paint but you dont want gloss, too shiny....

I've got to say even your open gills look much darker and cleaner than mine, almost like you've got some sort of backing to block them from the motor compartment.

IMHO,
Willcox Inc.
Mine is painted black (as recommended by GM and all other Corvette fact books and bulletins)......otherwise, it's very conspicuous. On '68s without the trim it looks OK for body color in the entire area IMHO.

Edit....my mistake......I was thinking you meant filling in the louver trim package....without the silver trim, I would definitely paint the insides black. Mine was body color when I first bought the car, but I gave in and painted the rear area black when I installed the trim.
if you look very closely you will see a glue line where the front clip is bonded,
to the Firewall, there are actually 2 layers of glass there.
If you ever install a front clip just a dab of Glue will be visible there.
It is also a good place to look for past repairs. 69VETT
