Having trouble starting my 81'. The only way it will crank over is to wire a remote starter switch. Could the factory anti theift system be the problem? Or maybe it just needs a new switch ( the one mounted on the lower column. Anyone out there had a similar experience?
First, I would check to see that the purple starter wire is hot in the crank position, if it is the anti theft system isn't the problem. You can pull the anti theft module in the jack storage compartment. If the module is bad it will start then, also check relay under ash tray. you can always place a jumper wire to the relay harness and see if it starts.
I would get a test light and see where power stops to the starter
If it cranks and won't start check power to the distributor
Follow this post..I just spent a week on the forum and under my car trying to figure out the same thing...I took out the steering column and replaced the switch and it is good to go.
What else is or isn't working? Do the dash lights and radio come on with the key to ON? Headlights come on with the switch?
Here are a couple diagrams on the alarm system. In the first one you see the interupt relay on the left. If he alarm is set, the module will provide a ground for the relay which will kill the starter. Unplug the alarm module and it should start. Do you have a book on this thing? You might simply be able to disarm the alarm by unlocking the doors with the key. Use the test lite like speledon says, it will tell the tale.
The second diagram shows the alarm switches and the link to the locks.
