Default HEI distributors

I have been wanting to get an HEI distrib with mechanical tach drive....I don't know squat about distributors just yet. I just had a conversation with some guy that told me that if I want this type of distributor that I need to make sure that it is made correctly...he suggested that some with some of these, if you got into a situation where you had electrical trouble and tried to jump the car with jumper cables, there is a possibility that you would fry some kind of component...I think it was some kind of modulator that he mentioned....IS THIS CORRECT? If it is then what info do I need to ask for to make sure that I am getting one properly made or purchased new? or another question would be how do you jump start a car with an hei distrib with mech tach drive without screwing something up?

You can send your point style distributor to a specialist and have it converted to HEI.
http://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/ does the conversion.
Here is something from his website...
General Motors Corvette FI and/or tach drive
This conversion is remote module mount only, and does not permanently alter the distributor.
Full HEI conversion — $175.00
Or you can buy an HEI tach drive distributor for about $450-550, from Summit or Jegs (I haven't looked for the exact price, but it is in that range.)

It's not a good idea to jump off a newer car due to all the electronic parts they have and their computers. I don't think it will hurt an older car as long as you get + to + and - to -. If you get them crossed you'll fry your alternator.

I currently have an HEI distrib installed from the previous owner but it does not have a mech tach drive...I have heard that I could get an electrical tach from say a 75 and just change out the face plate but it seems to me that pulling apart the dash to do this is a big job...just reciently got the vette to a daily driver condition and soon will be the main mode of transportation...big jobs are a sacrafice I am not ready to tackle just yet. :( But I know I will have to get over it sooner or later.
