Has anyone used a trans cooler and by passed the radiator? I was told the trans would run cooler it I did not run the trans fluid through the radiator and only through a external cooler. What is your thoughts on this any proof one way or the other?
Thanks
My un-informed thinking would be that the external cooler is designed to provide additional cooling, not designed to be the only cooling. Maybe if it was a good sized one, but then you are blocking your radiator more.
i Cant remember the size the cooler but it just fits nicely in front of the rad, i pulled the lines out of the rad and plugged the rad holes then cut the lines and attached high pressure hydraulic hose to the fittings on the cooler with gear clamps works great. 350 and stock auto trans

well how well do you cool when your running though a hot rad?
I was told that if a radiator runs at 195 degrees that the trans fluid never get below that and if you by pas the radiator and just use a cooler the trans runs cooler. the size o the cooler in the radiator is smaller than an external cool would be anyhow.

the cooler in the rad is flat like a pancake and about 10" long and 2" wide not much for cooling.
Whats is the enemy of oil? .....heat....brakes it down.
keep it cool man

Thanks for that info so I would do better with an external cooler I would think. My 77 runs from 180 to 200 degrees. And if I put a higher stall it would create more heat. I just wonder if the engine temp would fall with out the trans running through the radiator.
Running a transmission too cold is just as bad as running it too hot. The cooler lines run through the radiator to help warm the fluid when cold as well as cool it when hot. Typically your tranny will run about 20-30 degrees cooler than you engine temps. It’s good to run the line through a cooler first, but then it’s best to go through the radiator before it returns back to the tranny. This will keep the transmission in it’s optimal operating range.
That makes since to me but why do you say to cool is not good?
Too cool will cause clutches to slip more, causing premature wear. Check out BTO (Bow tie Overdrives) website, there is lots of good information there on this subject.
PS. I’m not saying a cooler isn’t a good idea (I run one) Just plum it correctly for the best performance.
Thanks I'm going to get a trans temp gauge to keep a good look at it and know where I should be. I see 175 to 225 is the best temp for them. Thanks for all you info that is what I'm a member here for.
To me that states what we know “Heat Kills Transmissions” it says the optimum range is 175 – 225 and what happens above those temperatures. Since a preferred range is noted there must be a reason to heat it up to 175..
Edit>>> i should note that BTO wants their trannys to run in the 150 range.I know its cooler than what this website specified, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
