Default Hooker sidepipes

Hi all

I was just reading an article about hooker side pipes, I have them on mine. Two qurstions, first is about the inserts, how do i know what baffel i have in there and what is recomended for the performance. Second I tried to remove one of the pipes one day and got to seperating the pipe from the collector and spent two hours without any luck, any tricks to getting them seperated. P.S. i did romove the one bolt clamping the pipe to the colector.

Thanks
Gary

Get a mirror and look up the end of the exhaust and you will see if you have baffles or glass packs , pretty easy to tell apart. The baffles will look like an Ice auger with a 1" hole in the center of it. You should be able to see the glass pack and the fiberglass in there if you have plass packs.
to twist your pipe loose ,try a rubber pipe tool " looks like a large gar opener.

So if I do have the ice auger type is it worth spending the money on a diffrent type of insert, will it improve performance, what type works well?

If you do have the "ice auger type" you WIN

The Spiral Baffles are considered to be the best as far as performance goes but it seems the new Hooker Max Flows are right there with them. If you do a search there is lots of reading to digest about the "baffles".

For some people, there's a tradeoff when choosing baffles. More power = more noise.

I have the Max-Flo's and while they flow very well, they're also quite a bit louder than I would like. The Spiral baffles flow very well too, but the sound isn't quite as "pleasing". Long ago I ran the Hooker glasspacks on a LT-1 and they were somewhat quiter than the Maxflo's but they certainly choked off some HP. I'm guessing a 50 HP increase when the side tubes were removed.

The main reason I went with the STS baffles was that they are somewhat tuneable and once you get them to where you want them they will always keep that tone. Having Corvettes for the last 32 years I have gone through many sets of glass -packs. They sound great at first but they tend to deterioate over time and before you know it they sound like crap. Its not something you notice all at once , it happens over time and all of a sudden you say to yourself " these sound like crap " . But what works for me may not be for everybody.

I bought STS for not only for good performance, but I really liked the "tuneability". I can adjust the volume of airflow/noise.
