i put new shocks front and rear on my 72 today.
nothing super hard core but basic oem replacement.
i was using my haynes manual.
it said to let the front hang free but the rear wheels needed some preload on the spring before i unbolted the shock.
i didnt have a problem changing them out but i was just wondering why the rear needed to have preload on the spring while the front was ok to hang free.

There is some play in the rear shock mounts. If you don't jack up the trailing arms to ~ride height the shock mount can tilt downwards a bit and it won't align correctly with the shock.
