77 L-48. Plan on replacing a leaking PS pump. Got a re-manufactured one and have to use same pulley. Do I need a pulley puller or some special tool to do this? Can someone give me a quick explaination of how to swap this pulley. Newbie wencher here.
Heard it said if it is pressed on you will have to obtain a special tool, which maybe you can borrow at AutoZone or someplace like that. I just replaced my pump this weekend, considered myself lucky that mine was held on by a nut. But unfortunately that was about the easiest part of the job. Sure hope this rebuilt pump holds up; don't want to go thru that again ever in my life. (BTW, '72 350, with air).
Without it you can really mess things up. It cost less than $40 bucks and you will need it to put the pully back on with. I would recommend that you start to put the pully back on and finsih doing it on the car so you don't push it on too far that the belt would not line up correctly then you will have too pull it out a little (been there done that more than once).
You might want to but some pentrating oil on it just in case it is rusted on. onec you use the tool you will wonder how easy it can be.
Buy the tool. KD makes one that works very well and is around $40 (I beleive thats the one Napa sells). Also on that old of a pump you should run a tap in the hole of the pump shaft to clean the threads up. It will make things go much easier.
It will probably take some force to get it to break loose but, as long as you have the installer threaded in all the way you won't break anything.
Is your pump making any noise? If not you may want to consider taking back the reman pump and just going with a seal kit.

The pain in the butt is getting the belt back on. I've done a few times and got it down.
1st There are two bolt that hold the pump to the front of the block and remove those, then remove the one at the side of the block. Take pupm out
2nd Install new pump in the same location (For Belt Tension) as old
3rd dont cover crank on the mounting nuts. If you do, the pump itself will leak. One the pump is mounted wrap the belt arount the pulley as much as possible. Then take a screw driver and hold the belt tought. Have someone else crank the motor (Short Pulses) the belt wil slip onto the pulley and you can remove the screw driver.
4th Since this is the worst belt to change, I would do all others because if you ever have to change one of the other belts you first have to deal with PS belt.
I always discount power to the dist, so the motor won't start. (You don't want the motor to start, just crank)
Most people try to get the belt around the pulleys and then mount the two front bolts and that is a pain in the a--.
Hope ti helps, BTW the above is for a 81 vette yours might be different.
