4" backspacing on 17x8 will put wheels in same location as stock.

Those are prolly 17's but could be 18's. The problem is that the tires are too short and therefore there is too much wheel well showing around them. Whatever tires you use, they need to be as close as possible to 27 inches tall. A 255/50/17 is perfect.

A couple of things you may want to give some thought to. Do you want to run the same size on all 4 corners or do you want a staggered fit (wider in the rear)? As stated above if you want the same on all 4 corners 17x8 with 4" backspace. A 255/50 tire is the same height as the stock tire. There have been a lot stories lately about American Racing building their wheels "off shore" and due to this there have been long delays with "custom" backspace as well as quality issues. With that in mind you may want to consider Vintage Wheel Works. http://www.vintagewheelworks.com/products/wheels They are a bit more money but as they say quality wise "you get what you pay for". Go luck with what ever you choose to do.

From what i can see in the picture of the red one, it looks like they're running a staggered fit, thats what i would want to do...so just go for a wider rim in the rear? Any ideas on what width?

No, 255/50/17, not 255/70/17. I have custom grey center 15x8 Torq Thrust II's with 4" backspacing (-13 mm offset) and 255/60/15 BFG's all around on my 74 and the tires were VERY close to the e-brake cables on the rear trailing arms before I relocated them. For this reason, I would NOT go with MORE than 4" backspacing. Put the extra width on the outside of the rim if you go wider than 8".

Do a search on "18s" in this forum. There is lots of reading. Here this will get you started http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...-required.html

As you will soon realize all these cars are a little different. Some cars get 5.5" backspace to work with NO MODS others don't. This is a chance you take if you decide to go with 18x10s or even 18x9.5 in the rear.

I still don't understand totally the matter of the backspacing.

do this rim clear the brake caliper or not?

You need more specs on that wheel to know for sure. I am only guessing here, but my guess is that that wheel is intended for Camaros and TA's in the GM bolt pattern. Their disk rotor's and calipers are far more compact than a C3 Vette's. So I am guessing that they won't fit a C3 Vette.

17X8 4 inch backspace front with 255 45 17.
18X10 5.5 inch backspace rear with 275 40 18s
Stock trailing arms, ebrake cable relocated, no sway bar and rear spring shortened 1/2 inch both sides

Would love to see a view from the rear to get an idea of how massive the tires look and how well they fit. I've seen your car a few times at Kerbeck's Toys For Tots runs but, never noticed the width of the tires.
