Default Air conditioner help

I need to replace the compressor on my 78. I have been told that I should also replace the accumulator at the same time.
1) is there any thing else I should?
2) How can I tell if there is any refrigerant left in the system?
3) Was R 12 still being used in 78?
I have done a lot of mechanical work but have never worked on AC

I am assuming you are replaceing the compressor because it has failed. You should definately replace the accumulator and also the orifice tube which usually catches all the trash from the compressor. You should flush out the system also. R-12 was used in your car. To find out if there is pressure in the system take off the servicing dust cap and either user your finger nail or a small screw driver and depress the schrader valve lightly. Caution static pressure could be as high as 125psi.
